The historic landmark, Portland Head Light, is situated on the shore along the Fort Williams Park comprising a lighthouse, a gift shop and an award-winning museum. The history of the site goes back to the year 1776 when guards were placed to signal the town of Cape Elizabeth against the invading British navy. In 1791, a structure was constructed with a height of 72 feet and was lit with sixteen whale oil lamps. A Keeper's Quarter was constructed in the same year which currently houses the museum. The lighthouse was raised to its current height of 20 feet in 1865 and was comprised of two Fresnel lens until 1958. Today, the lighthouse is open to public and offers spectacular view of the ocean.
