    The New Mastersounds
Port City Music HallSeptember 09, 2014 8:00 PM
    504 Congress Street
    Portland, ME 04102
Even though the funk genre as a whole has fallen into a fairly fatigued state, with a good deal of bands that associate themselves to the style of music pandering into cliche territory, there are a few select bands out there keeping funk alive with innovation and a modern approach to song composition. English four-piece The New Mastersounds is one such group. Founded in 1999, the band has managed to gain recognition amid the funk scene with a lively, entirely instrumental sound that showcases snappy drumming, thumpy bass lines and astute organ solos. While The New Mastersounds might not gain widespread popularity or mainstream radio airplay, it is nevertheless a group that's dedicated to keeping the funk genre alive during a time when the music style's tides have almost ebbed into oblivion.

    Sarah Jeffe
Port City Music HallSeptember 10, 2014
    504 Congress Street
    Portland, ME 04102
Sarah Jeffe is a singer/songwriter folk artist from Denton, Texas. Her early work debuted in 2007 with a self-released EP that was well-received and critically-acclaimed both locally and in a couple of national publications, including Rolling Stone. Jaffe creates sparse, emotional folk tunes that often drift by with an almost ambient quality that draws a lot of deserved attention to her beautiful voice. Gently plucked acoustic guitar is the mainstay in her songs, but she'll often employ other musicians to add touches of accordion or strings. Jaffe's music has a discernibly reflective, almost meditative quality to it that has won her comparisons to famous female singer/songwriters such as Joni Mitchell.

After many years of frequenting the battle-emcee circuit, Seattle-based Astronautalis fuses his love of hip-hop with a sonic approach that combines rock music and country music-style storytelling. Rhyming schemes combine with electronically programmed beats as well as acoustic instruments, conjuring an easy comparison to Beck's familiar hybrid. Astronautalis has put out a number of independently released albums and EPs. His 2008 album is called Pomegranate and was released on Eyeball Records.

Brooklyn-based Rubblebucket is truly a 21st Century band with little regard for genre or conventional songwriting. Combining styles of electronic dance music, afrobeat, hip-hop and indie pop, the group refused to be pigeonholed by those who want easily digestible music. Rubblebucket is particularly known for their live show, during which all 8 members represent the spectrum of influence that sets them a part from the rest.

    John Mayall
    The Flying MonkeySeptember 12, 2014
    39 South Main Street
    Plymouth, NH 03264
One of the blues revival pioneers of 1960s England, John Mayall is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and the founder of The Bluesbreakers. As the front man of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, he led a number of now iconic musicians such as Mick Tayler of The Rolling Stones, Peter Gren of Fleetwood Mac and Eric Clapton at the beginning of their careers. In 1968, he turned to a more experimental sound and disbanded his group, though the band reformed in 1982 only to officially breakup again in 2008 so Mayall could pursue other solo projects with various collaborators. With a staggering discography and a career that spans over half a century, Mayall is already cemented in music history as a father of English blues though he continues to perform around the world today.
