His famous painting The Wreck has been exhibited many times, three times alone in 1880 - at The Century Association, the National Academy of Design in New York City and at the Louisville Industrial Exhibition in Kentucky. The Wreck thematizes life and death in a desert setting. This circle of life is timeless and the skill with which De Forest used his brush and commitment of colors makes the painting seem alive.

The art showcased in the exhibit leaves space for personal interpretations and a critical relaxation on the social, technological and psychological trends over the last ten years. Taos, New Mexico has attracted many artists with its beauty and mixture of Tao Pueblo Indian and Hispanic culture. Out of this mixture, the first art colony in the American West arose. Local Taos artists Joseph Henry Sharp, Bert Geer Phillips, Oscar E. Berninghaus, W. Herbert Dunton, E. Irving Couse and Ernest Blumenschein formed this society to be able to market their paintings in the East as well as locally. Many other artists joined the Taos Society of Artists since its foundation in 1915 and they have now become one of the best known art colonies in America. The exhibition features a selection of artwork created over the decades by the society.
