The church was built in 1818, and designed by famed architect Benjamin Latrobe in what is now an excellent example of Gothic Revival architecture. The church features three equal arches at its entrance, and parts of the church have undergone minor modifications over the years. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Constructed in 1922, the Lomax African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is a church of the African-Americans. It is believed that Martin Luther King addressed an audience in the basement of this church, which is why the place is of historic importance. The building is built following the Gothic-Revival style of architecture using red bricks and also has a cemetery and parsonage on site. The oldest grave in the cemetery dates as old as 1882.
