Scitech is a fun, educational and engaging science center conveniently located in the heart of Perth. As Western Australia's leading science education institution, this unique center offers interactive science experiences the whole family will enjoy. The heritage charm of the lawns and clubhouse has attracted a (mostly) gay/lesbian membership to this Loton Park Tennis Club. Visitors are welcome to join Saturday and Sunday tennis competitions, a great chance to enjoy afternoon Devonshire Teas and stay for a sunset drink. The club offers numerous social opportunities, including barbecues, club nights and movies under the stars. Tennis competitions run from October to May, but the six grass courts and two hard courts may be hired on any day during daylight hours. Booking is essential.
Take the opportunity to revisit the early era of settlement while driving through the picturesque hills and Bickley Valley. The Cala Munnda Heritage Trail offers both an historic and scenic journey. The 42 kilometers drive starts at the Kalamunda History Village Museum. It passes through the town of Lesmurdie, then meanders through the surrounding timberland and wine country. The trail is sign posted, but a trail booklet and audiotape is available from the History Village.
Beatty Park Leisure Center is a great place for those seeking interest in water sports, swimming and so on. It now offers indoor and outdoor Olympic pools and is home to City of Perth Swimming Club and Perth Aussie Masters group. There is an extensive range of swimwear and accessories for sale, and the light filled space with palms trees make it a pleasant place to train or splash about. Membership gives additional access to the gym, spa, sauna, aerobics, circuit training and water aerobics, personal exercise program and to social inter-center swimming competitions. If you enjoy skating or are just a novice, then the skating park at YMCA Headquarters at Leederville is the place to be in. At a minimal fee per session, you can try all the possible tricks and also learn a few new ones from experts while you are here. Professional skaters have a particular liking to this park since it is one of the largest parks in the state. You can also hire helmets and boards here and skate away to your heart's delight. The association is the representative body of climbers in Western Australia. It facilitates climbing, rescue and rope work courses, and, organizes and promotes sport climbing championships. Members climb regularly on rock faces near Perth, north to the spectacular gorges of Kalbarri and down to the crags of the southwest capes. Social and training nights are organized in Perth's climbing gyms mid week. Members receive a quarterly magazine, discounts at climbing suppliers and gyms, and the benefits of group travel to crags.
If you are after a sport of tennis while in Perth, then head to the Burswood Peninsula situated on the edge of the Swan River with stunning views of the city. The State Tennis Center has 13 floodlit courts and two Rebound Ace courts, one that is undercover. Courts and all tennis equipment are available for hire and if you need to take a break, visit the Center Court Café. Tournaments are held throughout the year and the center regularly hosts conferences and trade shows/exhibitions.
Diversity Diving Australia is known for having a highly qualified and experienced staff. Diversity Diving offers a range of dive tours, dive courses and dive equipment for hire. Dive tours on offer include a day trip to Rottnest Island, a wreck dive on the HMAS Swan and a night dive at the Busselton Jetty. Tours include transport from Perth.
Every year in summer more than 10,000 wader birds pass through Swan River Estuary Marine park. The Swan River is a sparkling blue waterway and the estuary marine park has several wetlands and mudflats. Pelicans, ibis and egrets are permanent residents. There are more than 140 marine species including ancient mussels that date back 6,000 years. Walk or cycle along the Milyu foreshore; there are information plaques along the way, Or enjoy the views across the mudflats from the observation platform at Pelican Point. Other access points include Alfred Cove, Attadale and Applecross.
Want to try a little of everything wild? Enjoy a weekend caving, bush walking, abseiling, cycling, canoeing, four wheel driving and more. Alternatively, enliven your weekdays trying squash, tennis, badminton or the regular Wednesday walk around the Perth foreshores. Wide open fairways between tall pines makes Collier Park Golf Course a pleasure for big hitters. The Island par three sixth hole requires an interesting tee shot and the Lakes par three fifth is not for the faint-hearted. Only 10 minutes drive from central Perth, golfers will find a spacious course, outstanding pro-shop, driving range, practice greens, practice bunkers and a licensed cafe. The mobile drinks cart is a bonus when you are far from the clubhouse.
The fast, tactical style of netball (similar to basketball but no dribbling) keeps it the most popular women's sport in Australia, and is bringing more and more men and boys to competitions. Grades from sub-junior to State League can be played in Perth, with the season lasting from April to September. Most adult grades (divisions one, two and under-17) play on Saturday afternoons.
