Built in 1904, the Peterborough Lift Lock stands at 19.8 meters (65 feet) and was considered to be the tallest during one point in history. A visitor center is located near the lock which enables visitors to ride on a boat to the lock and also provides history of its construction. The lock was marked as a National Historic Site of Canada in 1979 and has also been designated as a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in 1987.
One of the major attractions of Peterborough is the Riverview Park & Zoo. It is a popular destination for kids as well as families. The park spread over 55.5 acres (22.46 hectares) and has a playground, a golf course, garden, and a miniature train. The zoo is home to over 48 species including Meerkat, yaks, macaw among others.
