Minneapolis, Minnesota-based quartet American Scarecrows play a particular brand of folk rock that's drenched in old-time Americana. Made up of Seth Davin, Rude Kevin, Matt Broadbent and Allen Maier, the band approaches their influences with a wry smirk that allows them to gracefully add elements of classic country and smooth jazz and have it sound like natural extensions of their sound rather than tacky genre exercises.

This fun, secular holiday show from Bloomington Civic Theatre is an exciting departure from the typical holiday fare. Created by Tony Award-winning writer Rachel Sheinkin ("The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee") and the piano-violin-drum trio GrooveLily, this production centers around four talented actor-musicians delivering what you might call a concert with a story. It's the tale of a grumpy bachelor determined to stay at home on New Year's Eve -- until a chance encounter with a door-to-door lightbulb salesgirl changes his life and view of the holidays. "Striking 12" makes for a musical celebration of new beginnings and an uplifting holiday tradition, now back for a third season.
