»Avi Buffalo

November 24, 2014 8:00 PM

Southern California-based indie folk outfit Avi Buffalo (a spin on the name of chief songwriter, Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg) had the fortunate pleasure of signing with Sub Pop Records when its members were just barely out of high school. It's not difficult to see what the popular label saw in the band, however, as the Long Beach duo creates sparkling folk tunes that can hold up with the best of its contemporaries. Comparisons to the acoustic-based indie rock of groups such as The Shins and The Fruit Bats are practically inevitable, but Avi Buffalo brings enough to the table to avoid claims of complete derivation. Zahner-Isenberg is a creative songwriter whose hooks are catchy but rarely glaringly obvious or heavy-handed, which, coupled with the high-pitched, unique timbre of his voice, adds up to a strong combination of charm and fun, breezy pop.

Fleetwood Mac has historically been at its best when band tensions are high. After the group reached a breaking point in the late-1980s, many of the band's members left to pursue solo careers. But in 1997 the group reformed and has been busy bringing its brand of folksy classic rock to concert halls around the world ever since.

November 25, 2014 6:30 PM

AFI named her the greatest female star in Hollywood history. Overcoming her early labeling as "box office poison," Katharine Hepburn went toe-to-toe with such screen icons as Humphrey Bogart, James Stewart and Cary Grant on her way to win four Oscars. Her fierce independence made her a feminist icon. She dated Howard Hughes and had a secret 26-year affair with Spencer Tracy. Now, an unseen side of this legend comes to life in the one-woman play "Kate", by acclaimed playwright Rick Foster ("Vivien"). Set on New Year's Eve 1999, Hepburn reflects on her life and loves as she ponders, at age 92, what the future holds. »Alice Cooper

November 25, 2014 8:00 PM

The king of shock rock Vincent Damon Furnier, best known by his moniker Alice Cooper, rose to fame in the 1970s for his eleborate, horror movie-inspired live shows. During his heyday Cooper would put on performances that were just as much entertainment theater as they were musical performances and with guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood, boa constrictors and other lewd devices. Though Alice Cooper started off as a band in the late 1960s, Furnier adopted the name for himself starting in 1975 with his concept album Welcome to My Nightmare. With a catalog of music over two dozen records long, Alice Cooper continues to offer his morbid brand of performance art during live shows for a new generation of metal fans.
