Powell was christened after Major John Wesley Powell a conservationist and an avid explorer though he never set foot on this city. It became a city in 1964 though it was incorporated as a town in 1909 and is nestled between the Big Horn Mountains and the Absaroka Range. Due to the Shoshone Irrigation Project, crops like barley, sugar beets, beans, alfalfa and corn grow aplenty in this temperate climate. Some of the interesting places to visit are the Homesteader Museum and Powell Aquatic Center.
Powell High School is a rural public high school in Park County's Powell. It is one of the esteemed educational institutions in Northwest Wyoming. Their athletic team is called the Panthers and are state level champions in football, cross-country and, track and field. The school also has won many awards in debates and speeches.
