    »Buried Village

    The Buried Village, also known as the Te Wairao in the local Maori language, is an excavated village that existed until the late 19th Century. This Maori-European settlement saw complete destruction during the volcanic eruption that took place on Mount Tarawera. The eruption took lives of nearly 150 locals and left only an expanse of debris which was later excavated. The younger generations of the Smith Family, the owners of the Te Wairao, conducted various archaeological excavations and opened the place to the public. Thousands of visitors come here year after year to discover the Buried Village as well as to see the various relics and artifacts that remained here in spite of the mayhem.
