In 1805, the seven-hectare Jardin des Plantes (Botanical Garden) - of which 770 m² was taken up by hothouses - began to grow a wide range of plants. The garden's mixture of ponds and grass has resulted in varied fauna and flora, making the garden both a pleasant and educational place to visit. Here you can marvel at species collected from all over the world, including Europe's oldest magnolia, planted in 1807. In the north part of the garden, nineteenth-century hothouses are home to numerous medicinal and tropical plants from America, Asia and Africa, whilst the animal enclosure and fish and turtle ponds on the station side of the gardens appeal to visitors of all ages.
