Restaurants

»Grady's Bar-B-Que

A good place to get some great food, Grady's skips the frills and concentrates on serving tender, juicy barbecue instead. Popular for business meals or family dining, Grady's has personal-size meals and family (or larger) size orders. The brisket will melt in your mouth as the barbecue sauce runs down your chin and the fresh potato salad will remind you of picnics in the park. The beans have a robust, cowboy-style flavor. They are a great pick to go with the hot, spicy sausage.

»La Fogata

This is one of San Antonio's best-known Mexican restaurants, and for good reason. Both the food and the beverages are excellent. The margaritas will knock your socks off; be sure to enjoy one on the large, shaded patio. For Mexican cuisine, La Fogata sets an excellent standard with green enchiladas and queso flameado that cannot be beat. Other specialties include the garlic-heavy pollo loco, quesadillas and chile rellenos.

»Simi's India Cuisine

If you are in the mood for something different but a little familiar, Simi's is the place to go. The restaurant overcomes its strip-mall location with a truly elegant setting. A rich red carpet leads to cinnamon-colored booths and chairs around white-clad tables. Traditional Indian music plays softly in the background as waiters move quietly in and out of the kitchen. As with most restaurants that serve Indian cuisine, Simi's offers several selections prepared in an authentic tandoor oven. Try the Tandoori Shrimp or Tandoori Snapper. A lunch buffet lets you sample a few of the more popular dishes, and at night, you can choose from several combination dishes. The small bar pours a decent selection of beer and wine.

»Dave and Buster's

Start with 50,000 square feet of space, add an odyssey of golf simulators, upscale carnival midway games and sophisticated cyber games, mix in some good food and cold drinks, and you've got a great place to spend an hour or an evening.

»Jacala Mexican Restaurant

Escape the stresses of everyday work life by having a puffy taco and a margarita with your friends. The exotic ambiance of Jacala Mexican Restaurant invites you to relax. Wooden floors and ceilings provide a rustic, antique look. Plants surround the room as if you were in an outdoor paradise. A large patio outside inspires fond memories of warm summer nights. If you love spicy food, try the Chile Relleno Dinner. You will have a large, stuffed Poblano Pepper with picadillo, salsa ranchera, guacamole salad and beans and rice. If traditional Mexican cuisine is more up your alley, try the carne guisada or the famous Jacala Dinner (cheese enchiladas, beef puffy taco, chile con queso and rice and beans). Salads, sandwiches, tacos, enchilada plates and short orders supplement the dinner plates. Don't forget to try their Original ORO margarita (Cuervo 1800 and Cointreau on the rocks) and the Sangria Swirl (frozen margarita with a little Yago Sangria).

»Los Barrios Mexican Continental Cuisine

In a city where Mexican food reigns supreme, Los Barrios Mexican Continental Cuisine is one of the kings. But Los Barrios doesn't rely on formality—the menu promotes eating tacos, tostados, tortillas, and flautas with your fingers. The restaurant's large seating capacity is made homier with traditional colors and wall art, large windows and lots of lush green plants. A well-stocked bar and live music Friday-Sunday evenings help make the wait for a table a little more bearable. With a comprehensive menu offering everything from tacos and tamales to cabrito and cod, it's hard to decide what to order. However, you can't go wrong with the Classic Enchilada Assortment, which offers enchiladas prepared five different ways.

»Bob's Smokehouse

For that uniquely Texan barbecue flavor, Bob's Smokehouse is the place to go. Whether you choose the juicy brisket, smoked sausage, barbecue chicken or beef ribs, a better barbecue plate is hard to come by. For something a little outside the norm, you might want to try the lamb ribs. Be sure to get a helping of the homemade beans and potato salad, too. Finally, don't forget desert; the fresh-baked sweet potato pie is a real treat.

This unique restaurant on the outskirts of the Medical Center offers a satisfying menu of Szechuan, Cantonese, Hunan and Mandarin style cuisines. Traditional and comfortable, this restaurant is more elegant than most. Ding How offers both lunch and dinner specials. At night, order a la carte or from several combination plates. »Chris Madrid's Nachos and Burgers

This burger joint on the city's near-North side has been cranking out burgers for 23 years. Some people may think that a burger is a burger, but they probably haven't been to Chris Madrid's. A consistent winner of various critics' polls over the years, the restaurant won the 2006 local newspaper's Best Burger award. Like a lot of local burger places, this spot is decidedly low-tech and high-taste. The Cheddar CZ is its signature meal, but you might want to try the devastatingly good bean burger, too. Add an order of fries and a cold beer and you are in hamburger heaven.

»Luigi's

This great find hides behind an unassuming facade in a less-than-glitzy neighborhood. Once inside the door, you'll discover a menu ripe with delicious and authentic Italian dishes, an impressive wine list, beautiful decor and thoughtful service. Luigi's puts its own delicious mark on standard fare such as Fettuccine Alfredo, lasagna and manicotti. For an unusual side dish, try the steamed spinach with lemon and butter. The soft lighting and the pianist help create an intimate and romantic atmosphere.
