The retro luxuriousness of Bimbo's 365 Club's interior adds unexpected character to the venue. A wide variety of artists perform here, from local talent to major-label superstars on international tours. Past headliners have included the Detroit Cobras, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, They Might Be Giants, Seu Jorge, Aimee Mann and the Flaming Lips. Weekly Wing nights fill the floor with Charleston-ing zoot-suiters, accentuating the original plush crimson curtains of Bimbo's 1931 opening.
Depending on the date, you could find a Goth rock band or a swing band swinging. The crowd will be dressed according to the show, so the scene is never the same. But, what you CAN count on is a great show! There is a big stage, excellent sound, a bar, balcony, couches and tables where you can take it all in. Plus the crowd never disappoints when it comes to being entertaining in and of themselves.
An unmistakable part of the San Francisco night scene since years, Matrix Club (as it was originally known) will give you the quintessential experience of a night of clubbing. Exciting DJ nights keep everyone's foot tapping while the extensive drinks list keeps the spirits high, literally. Local DJs do their magic on weekdays while weekends find ones that are popular throughout the country.
At Hi Fi purple leather walls and floor-to-ceiling stained glass provide the ambiance, while excellent live jazz and funk provide entertainment. DJs also spin the latest chartbusters in this sleek lounge. The crowd is always grooving to the beats, thus making the atmosphere much livelier. There are also theme events that keep the nigh alive. The place is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 8p onwards.
Mayes Oyster House located in the Polk Gulch neighborhood is the oldest seafood restaurant in the Bay Area. A popular oyster bar and seafood restaurant by day, and a happening dance club on weekend nights, Mayes is a great destination if you are looking for some fun and food. The restaurant features a swanky bar that stocks fresh shellfish and eclectic cocktails, complete with a fireplace and booth-styled dining area. If you are looking for a trendy and social bar, come to the Lush Lounge, known for their specialty cocktails, comfortable environment, and great service. Voted "Best Pick-up Bar in San Francisco" and "Best Cosmopolitan" this year by the Chronicle, Lush features a variety of bargain-priced drinks: assorted flavored martinis and margaritas, a killer Bloody Mary, a bitter-sweet lemon drop, frozen drinks, and much more. Lush has it all. Leafy plants decorate the entrance of the room, and the walls are covered with vinyl records and posters of timeless stars like The Rat Pack and Marilyn Monroe. Two televisions are set above the bar that air classic videos such as Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo."
Do not come here for sightseeing. The drag queens that drink at Divas venture to this popular spot to let their hair down and have fun. Mostly over 40, the men here are pretty tough, despite floor-length dresses and always friendly. If you are a veteran of the scene however, you will like it here fine and you will find a crowd that appreciates the nuances of fine drag. Drinks are strong and the service is fast, you are, after all, among royalty. Only cash is accepted.
Previously known as Zebra Lounge, Atmosphere is two floors of high voltage clubbing that can be enjoyed on any night of the week. There are separate bars upstairs and downstairs and the bartenders are a friendly lot, always eager to take your order. You will find retro music playing on most nights, but the likes of DJ Solomon are also invited to get the crowds up and going.
A self-proclaimed beer cellar, there's a huge selection of draft and bottles to imbibe on before you hit the dance floor at The Cellar. The selection's not bad out there, either. Each night is a different party. Hip hop, techno, disco, if you can dance to it, it plays here. They offer a few VIP rooms which are rented for private parties. So, next time you plan a get together with friends, The Cellar has to be the place. It has everything inside. Exquisite cocktails and beer selection, a DJ spinning hit tunes and a lively ambiance. Check website for details.
The big white ship's bow labeled "Titanic" jutting out over this bar's entrance is hard to miss. Inside Gangway may have a nautical theme as well, but it is just a little too dark to tell for sure. Even in the obscurity, you will notice several suits and ties in here. There is a courthouse nearby and many lawyers and their clients sneak in here, at Gangway, throughout the day for respite from their legal battles.
This classic San Franciscan bar, located below the former Cable Car Theater, is literally accessed via a slide. What is known today as Slide was the former Cafe Dans, which served as a speakeasy for illegal gambling and spirits during prohibition. Ladies make sure to wear pants if you come for the slide, skirts and shorts are prohibited due to "slide burn." This underground adult playground retains the decor of the 1920s era, while priding itself for its modern-chic atmosphere. Looking for a Vegas-like nightclub in SF? Slide provides bottle service starting for premium liquor and plays 80s and 90s hits. They also hold events regularly.
