Praça das Artes is as much an architectural wonder as a performing arts center. It has been built to accommodate space constraints, on a strip of land squeezed between surrounding buildings. Gigantic concrete blocks have been raised from the ground level to create an elevated ground floor and numerous open spaces, covered walkways and stairways. It has been refurbished from 10 old structures, including a cinema hall and a music conservatory and the architects have retained elements of the original design.
