Chicago-based rock band Empires rose to fame with its indie rock tendencies and by utilizing the vast audiences available online. The band released its self0producted debut album Howl, on its website in 2008 and attracted over 70 thousand downloads worldwide. The band's indie/alternative sound recalls the garage rock revival of the 2000s while catering to the growing indie rock scene. Empires refined its sound on its 2012 album Garage Hymns, offering the same rock and roll vibes while capturing a more focused sound.

Coin is a Nashville, Tennessee-based indie pop group that was founded in 2013. Writing songs with unabashed pop sensibilities, Coin indulges itself and is unapologetic about who its bright music sounds. Though some might criticize the group's music style as being overtly bright to the degree where it almost sounds like its lampooning itself, Coin has sidestepped naysayers and blazed its own sonic trail.

The Kopecky Family Band may not be related by blood but there's definitely a family vibe to their easygoing style of twee, country-tinged indie rock. The band trades off call and response boy-girl vocals over a bed of guitars, drums, bass, cello and violin. From their beginnings inside a practice room at Belmont University, the Kopecky Family Band has been making unpretentious, feel-good music since 2007.

    »Bb King

    October 01, 2014 8:00 PM

When B.B. King was 12 years old he managed to buy his first guitar for $15. Spending warm afternoons on his family's plantation in Itta Bina, Mississippi no doubt helped prepare the young guitarist for a life filled with pioneering instrumental techniques and collaborating with innovative musicians. Getting his first break in 1956 with a recording contract, King managed to lay down his six string prowess and impress nearly everyone that listened to the recording. Over the decades, King has managed to carve a reputation for himself as one of the most talented guitarists, whose sophisticated style of soloing has been imitated by nearly every other blues musician to have ever picked up a guitar.

Verdi's epic opera of love begins in a salon in Paris at a party thrown by the courtesan Violetta. Among the guests is Alfredo, who has admired her from afar and chooses this night to confess to her his love. Violetta resists, valuing her freedom above all else. However, Alfredo wins her over with his pleas and the two fall deeply in love, and they begin living together outside of Paris. However, the lovers are interrupted by Alfredo's father, who renounces his son's decision to live with Violetta. Violetta becomes convinced against her heart's desires to leave Alfredo alone. Through misunderstandings and hurt, they end up at a party together, Alfredo gambling and raging, and Violetta heartbroken. In the final act, the two finally come together, but it is too late for Violetta's failing health. This tragic piece is one of the most widely-performed and celebrated operas in the world.
