The Midland County Historical Museum was founded in 1932 and aims to promote the study of Midland County. Artifacts and histories go all the way back to the days of Native Americans and pioneers through the Civil War and the World Wars. The collection is located in the Midland County Library and is free to the public. Guided tours are available upon request.

»McCormick Gallery

The McCormick Gallery, housed in the Allison Fine Arts Building on the campus of Midland College features works from student and non-student artists in its halls. The art decorates the hallways of the buildings and the works are changed regularly. Among the several exhibitions displayed is the Studio 3600 Series in which the works of student artists are showcased and can show some of their best and most formative art.

»George W. Bush Childhood Home

This house was home to the Bush family during the formative years of George W. Bush's life. Although altered since the Bush family moved out, the home has been restored to its original 1950s style. Many artifacts from the era have been placed around the home to show visitors exactly what a home from the 1950s was like. Visitor information is located in houses adjacent to the site so the entire home can be historically restored. Two presidents and two governors lived in the house, and one has to wonder whether there was something in the water.

»Downtown Lions Club Fire Museum

The Fire Museum in Midland contains the first two original fire trucks and other early fire fighting equipment. As the Lion Club strives to promote the awareness of Midland's past, this museum is sponsored by the Lions Club. In addition, during Fire Protection Week, school tours are given to children to provide information about early fire fighting history.

For once, an art exhibit for children that urges them to "Please Touch." The Fredda Turner Durham Children's Museum at the Museum of the Southwest is a small, but child-friendly space, designed to encourage children to explore through art. This multi-sensory environment has various interactive galleries, like the sound wall and the career center. Also, the Museum Art School is apart of the Children's Museum and holds exciting classes for kids.

»Marian Blakemore Planetarium

Housed within Museum of the Southwest, on Missouri Avenue, Marian Blakemore Planetarium is often called one of the best attractions of its kind in the Midland/Odessa region. The planetarium incorporates permanent exhibits, a state-of-the-art multi-media station, called Frances & Jack Brown Science Center, and most popularly, the Helen Greathouse Educational Discovery Dome. The magnificent Spitz SciDome towers over 40 feet (12.19 meters) and features high definition programs that are, arguably, the very highlight of a visit to the planetarium. Open all week, except Mondays and Sundays, Marian Blakemore Planetarium makes for an interesting visit.

»Museum of the Southwest

The Museum of the Southwest is more than just a museum, it houses three different unique buildings as well as a sculpture garden on the museum grounds. The art museum is always free and has over 12,000 works to its name with a focus on Southwestern and Native American art. The children's museum allows youngsters to has interesting and innovative interactive art displays, including drawing while on their backs like how Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. Exhibits range from Cubism, to Surrealism, to Pop Art and make learning about art and art history fun. »Haley Memorial Library and History Center

Unlike any other library, the Haley Memorial Library and History Center is truly a destination for historians and writers interested in the West. This research facility contains volumes found nowhere else detailing life in the West for early settlers. A number of different authors and historians have used the research center to add detailed and accurate information to stories or accounts. So even if you aren't planning on writing a novel anytime soon, you should still stop in to learn a little something about the history of the west that helped to shape the psyche of the United States.

»The Petroleum Museum

For those of you interested in the petroleum industry, the Petroleum Museum is the place to visit when in Midland. This is the first museum of its kind and traces the history of the men and women who first helped to make the industry such a success. The facility houses murals and dioramas, and a special section on the relationship between transportation and petroleum which includes a real race-car. Every other year, the museum inducts members into its hall of fame, the likes of which includes George H.W. Bush. With a gift store and summer camps for kids, there is always something to learn or see at the Petroleum Museum.
