House Of Desires (Los Empenos De Una Casa)

Don Pedro loves Doña Leonor who loves Don Carlos who's desired by Doña Ana. Mixing lyrical poetry, puns, songs, cross-dressing and mistaken identities, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz's romantic comedy "House of Desires" was written in the 17th century, but staged at D.C.'s GALA Hispanic Theatre by director Hugo Medrano in '40s Mexico, peppered with its machismo and sounds of mariachi. "House of Desires" -- a farce performed in Spanish with English surtitles -- examines the idea of free will for women at a time when they were still subject to a strict moral code.
