Naval Air Station Meridian or NAS Meridian as it is commonly known is actually an airport that was built on July 14th 1961. It plays a crucial role in the security of the region, and sometimes plays host to community events and National Holiday celebrations.
Surrounded by pine forests, Bay Minette is the administrative centre of Baldwin County and became a city in 1907. It was initially a settlement in 1861 for those building the Louisville & Nashville (L&N) Railroad in that region. Many were drawn towards its natural beauty and nearby Gulf of Mexico and Tensaw River Delta. It is known for its timber industry and is one of the most fertile farming regions in the state of Alabama. It also has many Civil War and other historical sites which includes antebellum buildings. Some of the registered National Register of Historic Places worth checking out are the First Baptist Church and Fort Louis de La Louisiane. Other interesting destinations are the Concrete Water Tower, the John F. Rhodes Civic Center, Bay Minette Recreation Complex, Blackburn Park, Community Kids Park and Rex Courtyard. It is also the home-ground of the Bike-O-Rama Motorcycle Rally which includes live music, games, food and other live entertainment.
