One of the premier venues for concerts and musical programs, Barns at the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, is renowned for its originality. Wolf Trap's Filene Center is located at America's National Park for the Performing Arts. This outdoor venue offers performances in every genre of the performing arts as well as educational programs, master classes, special events, and holiday activities for families. The Filene Center opened in 1971. Half of the seating (roughly 4,000) is under cover with open sides while the rest of the seating is on a sloping lawn, perfect for picnics.
A local high school drama company, the McLean High School Theater hosts performances by dedicated students and performers from the McLean High School. With a passion for drams and the craft of acting, these youngsters put up performances and re-enactments of their favorite works like Catch Me If You Can. The Robert Ames Alden Theatre seats 386 and is named for the former Washington Post editor. The theatre hosts music, dance and theatre performances and is ADA compliant.
Saint Luke Catholic Church celebrates and lives the Gospel of Christ through its conduct and beliefs. Located on Georgetown Pike in North McClean, the church is associated with the Saint Luke School located nearby. The vibrant house of worship offers various outreach programs and educational programs for the benefit of younger members of its parish. DC Hippodrome is a world arts entertainment company for live dance entertainment. Their group shows include the Polynesian Hawaiian Entertainment Show, Hawaiiana and Latin Caribbean dance shows called Fiesta. These are lively interactive full length dance shows complete with authentic costume and music.
Following an extensive renovation, this old movie theater reopened in 1998 as a venue for national and regional country, bluegrass, rock and folk bands. Great effort went into restoring the original luster of this art deco theatre. Smoking is prohibited in the dining area and the balcony of the State Theatre. The kitchen offers burgers, nachos, enchiladas and vegetarian entrees. Pasta dishes are also available. All these make this venue a delightful one.
An annual holiday show that provides an opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind handmade crafts hsuch as baskets, dolls, floral, jewelry, paintings, pottery/clay and a multitude of wood items made by local and regional artists. More than 250 juried crafters and gourmet food vendors participate. Santa visits the show for children to make their holiday wish.
Comprised of some 65 professional level musicians, this symphony presents works by composers from Germany, Austria, Italy, Great Britain, France, Spain, and America. In addition to the regular programs for full orchestra, the symphony gives concerts with smaller ensembles through the "Intimate Parlor Concerts Series" and recitals for the community.
The Lee Arts Center, located in the Lee Community Center, is a hidden gem in Arlington. Its private studios are occupied by a thriving community of potters and printers. They organize several programs and workshops in pottery, ceramic work, sculpting, tile-making, and printmaking. The gallery space hosts fascinating exhibitions that display works by resident artists.
Dance the night away, or just watch others in the spacious Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo Park in Maryland. Fridays feature square, contra and country dances. On Saturdays hear big band, Cajun, swing and R&B. Sundays are reserved for intermediate and advanced contra and square dancers. With the exception of contra, the public is welcome to watch, join in or take a lesson.
