    »Matt Schofield

    July 24, 2014 8:00 PM

Matt Schofield falls in the category as one of the fines British blues musicians, blending funk, jazz and blues to an original and modern effect. His guitar playing is noted for its likeness to masters such as B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. Schofield typically performs with an organ trio, an unusual setup for a modern blues musician. The trio of guitar, organ and blues is more often ascribed to the jazz style, a testament to Schofield's originality and unique musical sensability.

    »Rags and Ribbons

    July 25, 2014 8:00 PM

After listening to alternative rock band The Rags, any educated listener will easily pick up on the group's overt Irishness. The heavily accented vocals, the dreary and often lamentful lyrics, the airy new wave guitar flourishes, as well as the the band's general bravado all combine to create a sound that's more characteristically Irish than even Lucky - the cartoon caricature who helps hock the childrens' cereal Lucky Charms. Being Irish is not a bad thing, though. On the contrary - being Irish goes hand in hand with drinking and getting into drunken fights and bouts of revelry, which makes for extremely good rock lyrics.

    »Queen - It's A Kinda Magic

    July 31, 2014 8:00 PM

Led by the flashy showmanship of front man Freddie Mercury, Queen was undoubtedly one of the biggest rock bands of the 1970s and beyond. The group's combination of bombastic excess, refined songwriting, stylistic shape-shifting, creative production and strong instrumental prowess made it a unique act that expertly toed the line between mainstream pop and art rock. Besides Mercury, Queen's most recognizable lineup consisted of Brian May (guitar), Roger Taylor (drums) and John Deacon (bass). The UK-based band formed in London in 1971 and released its eponymous debut album a couple of years later. Quickly moving away from the hard rock sound it began with, Queen's eccentricities and experimental leanings would crop up on subsequent albums, as it utilized aspects of opera, country, jazz, rockabilly and glam rock to varying degrees. Songs such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You," "Killer Queen" and "Radio Ga Ga" are just a few examples of the countless singles the group released in the 1970s, and have since become ingrained in the zeitgeist of popular culture. Queen remained successful in the following decades until Mercury died from complications with AIDS in 1991. In 2004, a new edition of the band formed with May, Taylor and new member Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company) taking over on lead vocals.

    »Paul Thorn Live

    August 01, 2014 8:00 PM

Paul Thorn is an American singer/songwriter who traveled down a unique road before he became a professional musician. Thorn was a boxer for a period of time, but after not winning matches, he took a job working at a furniture factory in Memphis, Tennessee. During his free time, Thorn would play open mic nights at various clubs and cafes around the Memphis region. It was at one of these events when he was discovered and offered a recording contract with A&M Records. Thorn's debut album, Hammer and Nail, was released in 1997 and although his blues tinged Americana singer/songwriter material didn't manage to entice listeners to buy his first album, as he continued to write songs and spend time on the road, honing his craft, it would take time, but Thorn would ultimately find a fairly decent fan base.
