Although plans to construct additional Senate buildings after the first two (Cannon House and Russell Building) were designed as early as the mid 1940's, The Dirksen Senate Office was not built until 1954. After multiple delays and funding issues, the building was erected under New York architects Otto R. Eggers and Daniel Paul Higgings. The original blue prints had a full interior wing that was removed from the final construction of the building due to the many delays and increased costs. This portion of the building was later added but renamed the Hart Senate Office Building in 1982. The Dirksen Office is unique on Capitol Hill due to its window details of figures representing different industries such as farming, shipping, manufacturing, mining and lumbering.
