Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary is a hands-on family attraction with an indoor live flight butterfly aviary, interactive displays and a nature-based gift shop. Special events are held throughout the year and party packages are available.
The former home of railroad magnet, philanthropist and founder of Lehigh University, Asa Packer, this 11,000 square foot, three-story mansion overlooking the Old Mauch Chunk national historical district is a designated National Historic Landmark that features 18 rooms filled with original 19th century furnishings. Seasonal tours are available.
Jim Thorpe Memorial is dedicated to this famous athlete, who is considered one of the greatest Olympic athletes of his generation. His memorial is made of red marble, and depicts several images of him engaged in sports. The location has his statue as well, which depicts him as a football player. Another one in the same location, shows Thorpe holding a discus. The mound on which his memorial is placed, consists of soil from his native country, Oklahoma, from the Olympics ground in Stockholm, and from New York's Polo Grounds.
Pocono Whitewater's Skirmish USA features 50 award-winning playing fields among 700 acres. The fields are located at 211 North Meckesville Road in Albrightsville.
Opened in 1890, due to a generous gift from Milton Dimmick, the Dimmick Memorial Library offers reference service, Internet access, a copy machine, microfilm of local newspapers and census, a summer reading program and more.
Found on the second floor of the Hooven Mercantile Building next to the Railroad Station, the Old Mauch Chunk Model Train Display and Hobby & Gift Shop offers a brief history on the world of model trains. This display features 13 separate mainlines, realistic landscaping, more than 100 bridges and trestles, over 200 structures, including a burning building; and more.
The Brewhouse was built in 1905. At this time, the Delaware and Hudson Company sold the land to The Luzerne County Brewing Company. On March 20, 1905 the land was sold in the sum of $1.00 under the express condition that The Luzerne County Brewing Company would have erected or cause to be erected within one years time, a brewery of 100,000 barrels per year and sell each barrel for no less than $1.00 each. If The Luzerne County Brewing Company used the land for anything else or did not cause a Brewery to be constructed, sole ownership of the property reverted back to The Delaware and Hudson Company.
Developed around the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control project, Beltzville Dam, the 2,972-acre Beltzville State Park features the 949-acre Beltzville Lake with a shoreline of a little less than 20 miles. Situated along the Pohopoco Creek, in the southern foothills of the Poconos, guests of the park will enjoy such recreational activities as boating, camping, fishing, picnicking, swimming, and hiking.
Found in a circa 1875 former residence, the Bishop Memorial Library houses the Luzerne County Historical Society's genealogical resources and executive offices. The Library is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Located in the second church building on the left of South Franklin Street, this Osterhout Free Library branch is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays until 5:00 p.m. Other library branches in Luzerne County can be found at 2 Airy Street and 1021 North Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre and 126 North Main Street in Plains.
Wilkes-Barre's River Street Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, and consists of buildings constructed in the period between 1860 and 1920. Many of the buildings in the district are in the Gothic Revival and Beaux Arts styles, notable among which are the Luzerne County Courthouse and Irem Shrine.
