Mitaki is a fine example of the happy coexistence of Shinto and Buddhist religions in Japan. Make the 10-minute uphill hike from the station to taste traditional green tea while resting by a carp-filled pond and listening to trickling waterfalls nearby. After passing the hundreds of Buddhas wearing red woolen caps and dipping your head under the three waterfalls, look for the snake at the Shinto Shrine at the top of the path. It looks real but it is made of stone. Mitaki is one stop past Yokogawa on the Kabe line.
