Beauty & Spas
The Takegawara Bathhouse, the oldest of its kind, is primarily a public sand bath center. The wooden furnishings give it a very elegant and old world look and its interior consists of a large pit filled with sand. Every visitor is provided a yukata which needs to be worn before stepping into the warm sandy area. Except for the hand and feet you are completely covered in sand. The whole process is quite rejuvenating and relaxing. It's also believed to heal arthritic pains, muscle tension and body aches. Visited frequently by locals and tourists alike, the bathhouse is used as a common resource for relaxation.
The word "sento" meaning public bath, is charming, though not quite as nice as an "onsen" (spa). Nevertheless, it is quite sufficient for relaxing in soothing waters. But besides the various baths, there are also Jacuzzis, steam saunas and other facilities designated for relieving you of any stress and fatigue. The price is not too bad either.
This huge, three-floor fitness club caters to every fitness need, from rooftop tennis to hip-hop aerobics. Facilities include a large cardio-training area and a good range of weights, as well as a 25-meter pool, three squash courts, tennis courts and a golf practice range. The club offers a variety of memberships as well as casual visits for various prices, but squash and tennis (charged separately) are not included in the membership fees.
This is a member's-only fitness club located on the top two floors of the Crystal Plaza Building (you get a great view from the pool!). Facilities include two aerobics studios with a range of classes, including Box Fitness, a large cardio-training area, machine weights, a 25-meter pool and a large bathing/sauna area. Membership types and prices vary, but this is one of the more expensive clubs in Hiroshima.
The YMCA fitness center, known as WAAP, caters for all levels of fitness and offers a range of programs and activities. Facilities include a 25-meter pool (divided into three lanes), a full basketball court, training room, aerobics studio, and a tennis court. The aerobics program includes Hip Hop, Funk, Step and Beginners, and there are also regular lessons in the pool, from water confidence for adults to children's lessons, aqua-aerobics, and scuba-diving training.
The origins of Futsukaichi Onsen date back to 600, when it became a popular resort. In more modern times it has become serene and peaceful. The deluxe hotel offers guests a choice of well-equipped Japanese or Western-style rooms. There are separate men's and women's hot spring bathing facilities. The modern indoor baths are in large oval pools, with a cold tub, and a sauna in the bathing area. Outside are two landscaped open-air pools. The water is radioactive and is used to treat burns, surface wounds, sore limbs, and stress.
Modern, and with a style that is New York meets Japan, Joji is a Hairdresser with flair. The first impression of the shop is overwhelmingly stark and functional. The staff members are all young and energetic. To arrange a special cut, call in advance to ensure that the truly talented, more senior staff is available. Be aware, though, that Japanese is the first language of all staff. Prices are average for the area, which is the focal point for a lot of the big name foreign franchise shops.
